Manetheren is a historical nation comprised of what is now known as western Andor and Ghealdan. This famed nation was destroyed outright during the Trolloc Wars, but is now experiencing a revival spearheaded by Lord Perrin Goldeneyes.

[edit] Mountain Home

Encompassing the southern half of the Mountains of Mist north and east to the banks of the river Arivelle and south into what is now northern Amadicia. Its heart, however, was always in mountains and this is reflected by its name Manetheren which means 'mountain home' in the Old Tongue.

[edit] Government

Traditionally Manetheren was a monarchy with a queen who was an Aes Sedai and the king her warder.

As one of the most ardent supporters of the Compact of the Ten Nations Manetheren always sent aid to her allies when they were in dire need. This can perhaps be attributed to significant Aes Sedai influence. At the time of the signing of the Compact in 209AB Sorella ay Marena was queen.

[edit] Military

Perhaps the most significant aspect of Manetheren, particularly during its twilight years, was the heroic efforts of its legendary army the Band of the Red Hand. During the Trolloc Wars they and Manetheren became known as the thorn in the Dark One's foot[1] and the sword that could not be broken. When at last the Shadow sent massed trollocs to destroy the Band's home, none came to their aid.

[edit] Fall

King Aemon and the Band of the Red Hand held off massed shadowspawn for ten days vainly awaiting aid that would never come. It is said Tetsuan, Amyrlin at the time, betrayed Queen Eldrene out of jealousy - although it is not known in what manner. What is known is that when Queen Eldrene felt the death of the king, her warder, she was so stricken with grief that she took a sa'angreal and, with balefire, struck down those Dreadlords, Myrddraal and Darkfriends who had come against Manetheren. The effort required more of the One Power than she could safely draw and not only did it kill her, but she took the entire city of Manetheren with her to the grave.

[edit] Legacy

Throughout the ages many attempts have been made to resurrect Manetheren, but all have failed. Most recently, however, Lord Perrin Aybara (also known as Perrin Goldeneyes) has raised the banner of the Red Eagle, the symbol of Manetheren. He already has the Two Rivers district behind him and the Queen of Ghealdan, a traditional territory of Manetheren, has sworn alliegence to him. His marriage to a close relation of the Queen of Saldaea and abilities as a Ta'veren give him the best chance of succeeding where all others have failed.
