Arafel is one of the Borderlands, lying between Kandor on the west and Shienar on the east.. The country's eastern border is determined by the Mora River, which runs along the border between Arafel and Shienar. The sign of Arafel is three white roses on a field of red, quartered with three red roses on a field of white.

The nation of Arafel was formed early in the War of the Hundred Years. The governors of Hawkwing's five northern provinces met and agreed to form stable nations to preserve the peace and defend against the Blight. Mahira Svetanya was the first Queen of Arafel.

The government body of Arafel is a monarchy. The throne is currently held by King Paitar Nachiman; his sister Kiruna is an Aes Sedai of the Green Ajah allied with the Salidar sisters. The throne is located in the capital, Shol Arbela.
